365 Project Archive / March 2010

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 23 - 01/03/2010

Raiding the Fridge, something I do from time to time. We had my good old Nikon SB-26 Flash inside the fridge @ 1/64 power, Camera settings ISO 400, 1/30 sec Shutter Speed, F4 Aperture Setting

Day 24 - 02/03/2010

I'm on the road for business and staying in Klerksdorp tonight at the local casino hotel, as it so happens I forgot to pack something important, my Card Reader, so I'd like to extend a special thanks to Rosie from the Rio Casino for her help in finding me a card reader from the casino's I.T. Department so that I could bring you today's shot today.
Camera was set up on a tripod, set on ISO 100, 20 sec Shutter Speed, F22 Aperture Setting.

Day 25 - 03/03/2010

Damn travelling can take it out of you, that's what this shot is about, it should feel dead tired cause that's the way I feel today.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 26 - 04/03/2010

A squeaking door, A flash of light, My sneaky girlfriend came into sight, The colours rushed in from darkness, I was not alone...

So a bit of fun tonight, Cinz put the camera on the window sill, set it to ISO 400, 1/250 sec Shutter Speed, F9.5 Aperture Setting. The light was the Nikon SB-26 with a DIY Beauty Dish @ 1/4 power at about 75 deg camera right and at ceiling hieght angled about 45 deg down, triggered of course with a radio transmitter/receiver set up.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 27 - 05/03/2010

So Cinz was back at the "The Little Shop of Horrors" tonight for a new piece of extra special ink.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 28 - 06/03/2010

This little bugger never keeps still long enough for anything let alone a photograph, today though we managed to capture the moment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 29 - 07/03/2010

Eccentric, Eccentric, Eccentric, but aren't artists supposed to be? Cinz has wanted to get back into one of her old artistic mediums for a while now so we took out her easel and a painting that needed some restoring to get the ball rolling.
Shot at ISO 200, 1/200 Shutter Speed, F5.6 Aperture Setting, one light the Nikon SB-26 @ 1/2 power through a shoot through umbrella, camera right about 50 deg.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 30 - 08/03/2010

94 days to go and I'm starting to feel the fever!
Camera & lighting on the diagram below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 31 - 09/03/2010

No Fancy Lighting today, I thought I'd play with some processing, so this is a boringly well lit photo of what happens when I watch UEFA Champions League Football, Fiorentina (3) Vs Bayern Munich (2) for those interested.

I like this very processed almost surreal look, I'm not sure I quite cracked it this time, but I think I got a good result anyway. So what did I do;
After converting it from RAW format, I saved it as a 16bit TIFF file opened it in Photomatix and used the Tone mapping tool to give it the first round of over processed look, infact I did this twice just messed with the strength slider and the light smoothing options till I was reasonably happy. Then I opened it in Photoshop and applied a High Pass Filter process and that was it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 32 - 10/03/2010

Super 14, Formula 1, Soccer World Cup, and I'm travelling for business again tomorrow, whats a girl gotta do?
Camera set to ISO 320, 1/250 Shutter Speed, F5.6 Aperture Setting. Two Lights, Sony HVL-42 @ 1/16 power directly behind Cinz pointed at the wall to give that separation glow against the wall, and Sony HVL-56 @ 1/4 power with a shoot through umbrella camera right about 40 deg.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 33 - 11/03/2010

So today I was out of town so just a landscape of the area I was in today.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 34 - 12/03/2010

Yipeee! I got my Blackberry back today.
So I did some table top photography to celebrate. I used my Sony HVL-56 in wireless mode with a shoot through umbrella @ 1/2 power at a 90 deg angle to camera left with a Sony HVL-42 (also in wireless mode) @ 1/16 power about 30 deg behind the top of the phone to camera right and bounced of a white reflector.
Camera set on ISO 320, 3 sec Shutter Speed (so camera had to be on a tripod) , F32 Aperture Setting.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 35 - 13/03/2010

We thought we'd play about a little today, and try create a composite of shots of our kitchen antics, Cinz being her eccentric self of course :-).
How we set this up was to put the camera on the tripod set it @ ISO 400, 1/90 Sec Shutter Speed, F6.7 Aperture Settings. We had the Sony HVL-56 on 1/4 power with a shoot through umbrella on the stove to camera right, a Sony HVL-42 on 1/16 power hiding behind the lace curtain on the window sill at camera left and the Nikon SB-26 on 1/64 power inside the fridge.
After RAW conversion I created two layers in Photoshop and used the layer mask to make the parts I wanted to see visible, the back in Lightroom I applied this 300 style preset to give it this look.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 36 - 14/03/2010

So we had a photo shoot today 'A Vampire Story' look out for Cinz Blog on that in the future, but our male vampire model wanted a creepy new profile pic, so of course we obliged him.
I'm sure this could be one of the last things you see before you get hacked to death.
Shot on ISO 100, 1/200 Shutter Speed, F9.5 Aperture Setting, Nikon SB-26 on 1/2 power @ 45 deg camera right, Sony HVL-56 on 1/8 power at 45 deg camera left both in fairly close bare with built-in wide angle diffusers applied, I went heavy on the high pass filter in post processing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 37 - 15/03/2010

Strip Poker, and I think I'm winning :-D
3 lights used here Nikon SB-26 @ 1/4 Power with small soft box to camera right, Sony HVL-56 @ 1/2 power with diy beauty dish to camera left both angled across the scene, the Nikon for Cinz and the Sony on Me. The last light was a Sony HVL-42 @ 1/8 power bare with the wide angle diffuser on, directly under the table. Camera was on ISO 400, 1/200 Shutter Speed, F8 Aperture Setting. All the light in this photo is provided by the flashes, we turned off all the lights to kill any ambient light there might have been.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 38 - 16/03/2010

Burning the midnight hours with some image editing...
Today's shot is more about trying to mimick a specific light source, in this case a pc screen in a darkened room, than telling the story of my evening.
First I tried to use only the screen, but with an exposure time of 0.5 seconds @ ISO 400, it would be near impossible for me to get a sharp shot with out pushing my ISO right up and have to deal with digital noise.
So I set the camera on ISO 400, 1/200 Shutter Speed, F9.5 Aperture Setting.
Then I hid my Nikon SB-26 @ 1/64 power infront of the screen with the built-in wide angle diffuser panel over the flash and a light blue gel behind the diffuser panel to give the characteristic blueish colour of the pc screen, I brought up the rest of the scene ever so slightly with my Sony HVL-42 @ 1/32 Power up high and bounced off the ceiling.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 39 - 17/03/2010

It wasn't such a good day for us today, little Noel is sick, Cinz has the Flu and I had some nasty kind of bug, but despite our individual afflictions this household item was our friend and companion today.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 40 - 18/03/2010

This evening I was at football (soccer) grounds near the airport to do team photo's of our clubs ladies team at the regional cup final, when I walked off the fields to leave for home I saw this and thought there's a sight you don't always see every day. This was a long exposure shot, it was well after dark Camera was on ISO 400, 10 sec Shutter Speed, F8 Aperture setting.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 41 - 19/03/2010

3 nights of almost no sleep with Noel being sick is just to much...
I didn't realise my couch was this comfortable.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 42 - 20/03/2010

Cinz got way to much sleep last night and decided to play dress up for todays 365.  We didnt know which one to choose, so we just gave you all three.
Cinz did all the editing with a few presets in lightroom and ran it through the high pass filter process and created the collage.
Lights were the Nikon-SB26 on 1/4 power to camera right with a shoot through umbrella about 60 deg angle to Cinz and a Sony HVL -56 on 1/16 power with the DIY Beauty dish directly above the lens for on axis fill.
Camera was on ISO 400, 1/200 sec Shutter Speed, F8 Aperture Setting.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 43 - 21/03/2010

Oh the joy of grocery shopping.....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 44 - 22/03/2010

So today Cinz decided that I do something a little different with myself, maybe she tried to make me up to see if I can out weird her, I dont know you be the judge...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 45 - 23/03/2010

Just messing about with light today, so how did we do this, first we put the camera on a tripod cause to do this you need a long exposure, then set up the Sony HVL-56 @ 1/2 Power directly behind me pointed at my back, and the Nikon SB-26 to camera right on 1/4 Power with a shoot through umbrella.
We set the camera on ISO 100, 8 sec Shutter Speed, F8 Aperture Setting. I held a torch in my hand out of frame. So what happens is when the shutter is pressed the flash exposes me on the sensor all nice and sharp like, I start circling the torch pointed at the camera , because it's dark the sensor the only picks up the movement of the torch creating this light trail for the rest of the exposure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 46 - 24/03/2010

Just a nice candid today, was a the football club in Alberton, taking team photo's of the Veterans Cup Final, and with the weather being a little cool Cinz and the boys spent some time in the club house.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 47 - 25/03/2010

This was the first night in a while that we got some quiet time for ourselves...
This was lit only by the candles, I had to trade off over exposing the candles themselves vs the rest of the scene. Camera was set on ISO 400, 1/6 Shutter Speed, F4 Aperture Setting.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 48 - 26/03/2010

Ok so here we go a game of 'What is it', I made this first one easy, but they will get more difficult when next we do one, so post your guess as a comment HERE.
